IP limits have been set on etree01-etree08 now (etree01 and etree03 are limited to two simultaneous connections to support Open Content Network AKA Onion Networks AKA Tornado Cache). If anyone can test any of the machines or if problems are experienced, please report. Thanks and hopefuly this will help the bandwidth situation and speeds will increase for users.

No matter what the final config, I hope it will be set to be able to upload something at the same time as download something.

FWIW I have been uploading in all the "test" that I have tried... so I think that the uploads are completely different...

hi,

i was able to simultaneously connect to etree01-08
but i was not allowed simultaneous connections on
any one server

i tested using an ESNET broadband connection
into 100Base-T ethernet (i.e., my connection
was not the limiting factor in d/l speed) --
i pulled the following bandwidths (average of
about five minutes while i had the above
simultaneous connections all d/l'ing):

server d/l speed (+/- 10 KB/s)
====== =========
01 75KB/s
02 75KB/s
03 95KB/s
04 95KB/s
05 NA
06 100KB/s
07 85KB/s
08 90KB/s

cheers,
kevin

Is there a way to prevent this too? Might be a good idea...

Prior to this comment, I hadn't thought about connecting to 7 different servers at the same time to get 7 different shows. I'm sure some folks have discovered they can do this and are abusing it.

I was able to do this too and got between 3 and 8 KB/sec for each machine (not much, but a lot more than 13K on one machine). Looks like that may be the next step...

How is downloading 7 shows at once abusing it, if they're all coming from different servers?

Ok, let's say you see 4 shows that you want on 4 different machines. You log in to each of the 4 machines and grab them all at once. Ordinarily you'd get 15K/sec for a single show download, but in doing this you find you can get 9K for each of the 4 downloads giving you 36K instead (see details above showing this). Suddenly, 4 other people who only have 1 connection see their speed dip from 15 K/sec to 6K/sec - all that stolen speed goes to your downloads. You get your stuff faster than those other suckers do...

In my opinion, the limit needs to be 1 connection per user for the entire site at one time. No more multiple connections, no more grabbing six shows at once. That's about as fair as we can get things.

Let me turn this around TwoStone41, how is using multiple connections to different servers so you can get more speed fair? (Maybe abuse isn't the right word) Everyone here would like more speed. By limiting this in addition to the measures Jon has just taken it pretty much makes it as fair as it can get, and in theory everyone should have the same speeds and get shows in the same amount of time.

There's 130Mbit/sec for the entire Archive site whether we use 1 machine or 100. Adding servers doesn't make things faster. 1 connection per person will be the fairest we can make it.

I totally agree with this....on normal FTPs within say the etree community, 99% of the servers allow 1 connection per host, archive.org should be the same way, nobody "needs" to download 4-5 shows at once........the shows are not going anywhere, they'll be there tomorrow. Be patient, dont hog all the resources, there are plenty to go around~

By the way, downloaders are able to do this via FTP too...
